As the harbour front draws nearer, you are greeted with the scene of relaxed and friendly, unpretentious tavernas, piles of fishing nets and rows of small fishing boats bobbing at their moorings. |
Halki is one of Greece’s best kept secrets. An island with very stringent building controls, allowing only building and renovation in keeping with the traditional style. Thus, the island retains its individual identity, with tourists necessarily restricted in number by the limited water supply (brought in twice a week by tanker). Yet it is relatively easy to get to. |
The Greeks who live here are warm and welcoming and the eating is as good as you can get anywhere in Greece! There are enough tavernas to offer variety, but not so many as to be overwhelming. |
